Something that people involved with 3D printing inevitably yearn for is a cheap, effective method of 3D scanning. There are some solutions available to hobbyists today, using lasers, photos, or the Kinect, but none of them are quite as exciting as this.

Spinscan is an open source 3D scanner that uses a motorized, 3D printed turntable. This allows an object to be rotated automatically, so that areas of an object can be scanned with precision.

Tony Buser, who created Spinscan, uploaded this scan & print of a garden gnome to Thingiverse earlier in the week:

The whole setup is still under development (and there’s currently a bug involving the Z-axis) , but you can follow the project through its Thingiverse page, or dive right in to the software and hardware repositories on github. This should really make for a fun kit to build, and you just can’t go wrong with a project that uses both Processing and OpenSCAD. 🙂
