5.2mm/0.204″ Bamboo to be replaced

The 5.2mm/0.204″ bamboo is one of our most popular materials. You love it, we love it.

However we’ve had a few issues with the supply and quality of the 5mm Bamboo in the US catalog. As such, we have had to remove it from the catalog.

But we are getting a new bamboo stock into the catalog very soon. It’s similar / the same in color, but it will be thicker – 1/4″ / 6.35mm – and it’s a 3 ply construction rather than the single ply we have currently offered.

Unfortunately there will be a moment where no bamboo in this thickness range will be available within our online catalog. So if you have an urgent need for some bamboo in this time, please contact us and we can work something out.

We hope to have the new bamboo online in the next 2 weeks. The pricing will be $30 for a P3, $16.67 for a P2 and $4.69 for a P1.

If you have designs that have interlocking joints made from bamboo you’ll need to adjust your files for the new thickness. If you have any questions about this please get in touch, we’re happy to help out.

Ouch! More than double the price of the 5.2. I guess it’s time to switch to the thin stuff…

Hi Nick – yeah, it’s unfortunate that the cost jump is so substantial.

We’ve done our best to find a quality product with assured supply around the same price, but it’s proved fruitless.

The two main benefits with this new material are:
a) we are confident that it will not run into supply issues like our previous stock.
b) it is much stronger and durable than our previous stock, which was susceptible to snapping along the grain.

this hurts…

Not only will I have to spend time on some products designed for this bamboo, but I will have to go around and change my pricing structure on Etsy.

Any chance you can get some of the old bamboo with the understanding there might be supply issues that take longer?

Hi Whystler,

We totally agree this is an unfortunate situation.

We came to the conclusion that we would have to find a new bamboo supply after being told (out of the blue) by our previous supplier that they would not have any more in stock for 2-3 months.

The only other option open to us was to internationally air freight supply in from their source to keep us going, which would have worked out even *more* expensive for a P3 than this much higher quality material (almost $40).

We are sorry about the inconvenience this change causes, and I assure you it’s not one we made lightly.

It *is* possible we will be able to get supply of the old stock in again in at some point in the future – but it’s been made clear to us that we cannot guarantee any ongoing consistency of supply for it.

I hope it’s obvious we’re doing the best we can here.

I understand you’re doing the best. Why would you guys do otherwise?
Doesn’t make it suck any less. So you get to hear our painful groans, aren’t you lucky? 🙂
My best (only?) selling product is made with this bamboo. I hope it will sell at a significant price increase. Actually I think I’ll go for the less attractive birch, and keep the pricing the same.
I’m noticing that this change is effective immediately in terms of no old bamboo. Any chance you have some laying around for an order I have to fill on a single 384×384 sheet?

Thanks for following up on this Whystler.
As I mentioned, we were sadly given no warning about the fact there would be no more 5.2mm available for 2-3 months, which left us needing to pull the material from the catalog somewhat suddenly.
Could you drop us an email to service@ about the order you need to fill? We’ll check it out at the beginning of next week and do everything we can to help.
