Kickstarter Project Repurposes Milling Machine
Music is personal. It tells a lot about who you are, and there’s a current Kickstarter project from Bo Gehring that sets out to capture the intriguing relationship between people’s appearance and their choice in music.
How does he do this? By re-purposing a CNC milling machine.
Instead of a material to be milled, the subject of the video portrait lays on the machine bed. The accuracy of the digital manufacturing technology allows for extremely smooth and controllable motion for the specially mounted HD video camera. The outcomes are eerily mesmerising, as Bo explains:
The fascinating thing about these portraits is that they reveal the subject in a way we can never experience with our own eyes- we just can’t focus at this distance. The detail and motion capture are so good that we sense the subject’s breathing, pulse, and most subtle facial expressions as his or her chosen music plays.
