What Is Laser Cutting & Engraving?

Laser cutting and laser engraving are digital making methods available online from Ponoko direct from our making studio in Wellington, New Zealand.

Laser cutting is a subtractive manufacturing technology that uses a high-power laser beam to cut flat-sheet materials. A computer directs this laser to follow the cutting line in your digital design. The high-precision laser vaporizes a cut line through the material, leaving a 90-degree high-quality cut-edge finish.

Laser engraving is similar, but instead of using the laser beam to cut through the material sheet, it engraves the material surface. Following the engraving line or area in your digital design, the laser vaporizes a thin layer of the material surface, exposing what lies beneath and leaving a burn mark that is more pronounced on more combustible materials like wood.
