How Grant Bouvier Uses Custom Laser Cut Panels To Make\u2014And Brand\u2014His Synth Modules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve heard the old adage \u201cnecessity is the mother of\ninvention.\u201d Such is the tale of how Grant Bouvier began making synthesizer\nmodules. An electronic artist and music\ntechnologist, Grant\u2019s interest in synthesizers began when he started his\nundergraduate studies at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I started to move away from soft\nsynths and VST toward analog and hardware synths, I began to wonder how hard it\ncould be to build my own,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe majority of the most sought after\nsynths and modules, both current and vintage, were basically out of my budget\nas a student, so I decide to start digging online about building some myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once he was introduced to laser cutting<\/a> by a professor, he was hooked. \u201cAs I built up my knowledge base about electronics and product design (including laser cutting) over my sophomore and junior year, the idea of building some professional quality modules became more and more realistic. Finally, during my senior year I decided to design and build a prototype set of voltage controlled oscillators adhering to the eurorack modular standards. This eventually became my senior thesis, as I incorporated elements of both the east and west coast schools of synthesis to build VCOs that were uniquely fit to serve my needs as an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
