How Faith Guynes Uses Laser Cutting To Save Time Making Custom Miniatures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Making furniture pieces of any size requires a fair amount\nof labor, as the component pieces must be cut to exact sizes in order to\nproperly fit together and be level. When you set out to make miniatures,\nhowever, the scale may be reduced but the need for precision is magnified. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing Laser Cutting <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Like many makers who find their way to laser cutting<\/a>, Faith Guynes\nwanted a product that she couldn\u2019t locate anywhere else. Thus, she had no\nchoice but to build it herself. \u201cWhen I became interested in miniatures,\nI couldn’t find any modern furniture in my favorite scale, so I began to make\nsome myself,\u201d she says. \u201cI received a lot of positive interest online and\ndecided to sell my creations<\/a>.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her mid-century dollhouse furniture is\nbuilt in 1:48 scale, and Faith says she finds inspiration for her pieces in\nartists such as Frank Lloyd Wright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI browse images online for inspiration and compare ideas to Ponoko’s materials<\/a>,\u201d she explains. \u201cI find it best to look at the available materials before starting a project, that way I know the limitations of my design and can make any needed alterations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faith has found that birch plywood<\/a> works well for her needs. \u201cI like to use plywood because it’s affordable, sturdy and works great for cutting and engraving tiny features,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working With Ponoko<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For makers like Faith who sell their\nwork, consistency is key not only for uniformity of product being sold but also\nfor faster assembly times (as time is money!). With laser cutting, she can have\nnot only identical pieces but also fast turnaround.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like how laser cutting is a quick way to mass-produce designs,\u201d she says. \u201cWhenever I make miniature furniture by hand, it proves difficult and too time consuming, especially when I’m making things smaller than my thumb.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
