How Stephanie Law Uses Custom Laser Cut Frames To Build An Unmistakable Brand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you see a piece of art by Stephanie Law,\nyou know it\u2019s exclusively hers. In a meld of organic patterns and familiar\narchetypes, her paintings pose a question on the nature of perception and\nbeauty. It\u2019s against this backdrop that the ephemeral guides and strange\ncreatures dance and beckon the viewer to follow through her various series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She draws viewers in by interweaving texture, watercolor, gold and silver leaf, and ink. If that weren\u2019t enough, she then intricately layers pieces with resin and adds her signature flair with custom laser cut<\/a> frames. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is not only a beautiful and unique\npiece of art but also a firmly established brand unlike any other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carving Out Her Niche<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Like any other field, the business of art is\nhighly competitive. Not only must artists connect with patrons on an aesthetic\nand emotional level, but they also must separate themselves from all the other competitors\nin order to get buyers\u2019 attention and sell their pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCreating differentiation is especially\nimportant in this time of a global marketplace,\u201d Stephanie says. \u201cToo often I\ngo to art events and find that several artists are using the exact same frames\nfor their work because they purchased those frames from the same websites.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an artistic world dominated by the rectangle\nframe, Stephanie knew she had to do something completely different to break out\nof the proverbial box. For a recent gallery\nshow, she had an idea to extend the paintings beyond their frames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInitially I thought about 3D printing\nthese frames, as I have played around with 3D printing in the past and it made\nsense when I began entertaining the idea,\u201d she explains. \u201cBut I discarded the 3D\nprinting idea because I didn’t like that plastics were really my only option\nfor the kind of thing I wanted to create. It felt like a lot of expenditure to\ncreate something that in the end would cheapen the art simply because of the\nmaterial limitations. Also, I was concerned that 3D printed plastics would be\ntoo fragile for the delicacy that I wanted to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This realization sent Stephanie on a\nquest to find the right manufacturing technique for the artistic impression she\nwanted to create. Enter laser cutting. \u201cA fellow artist recommended I try laser\ncutting with Ponoko,\u201d she says. \u201cAfter a test piece, I decided it was\ndefinitely the path I wanted to take for the art installations that I had in\nmind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laser Cutting Her Way To Success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie\u2019s paintings are beautiful on their\nown, but using custom laser cut frames adds another dimension to her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She begins each project with\na painting, primarily working with watercolors, then incorporating gold\/silver\nleaf and ink for one-of-a-kind mixed media creations. Many of the pieces have unusual\nshapes with elements that are cropped by the boundaries of the piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love to paint using unconventional\nshapes for the border of my art,\u201d Stephanie says. \u201cThis is always something\nthat is tricky with watercolors though, because watercolors need some kind of\nprotection for the surface, which usually means matting and framing. By being\nable to custom design and create my own frames, I can make my art stand out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take the Phoenix<\/a>, from the \u201cWhere The Sea Meets The Sky\u201d series, for example. Not only is the painted surface round but the wings also extend from the painting all the way into the frame\u2014and there\u2019s not a boxy right angle in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After assembling the frame with the\npainting, Stephanie seals the painting area with poured clear resin to finish\nit off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the style of Stephanie\u2019s art, wood is a natural fit for the frames. \u201cI choose the Premium Veneer MDF – Cherry<\/a> for most of my projects so far,\u201d she says. \u201cMy art has a very organic feel to it, so I liked being able to choose wood to complement that aspect. Additionally, I like how the cut edges of the wood contrast against the uncut top surface. It adds an extra dimension to the art by having those two tones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie was also attracted to wood because of\nits strength but admits that it\ntook a few pieces before she got the feel for how delicate and thin she could\npush her designs. \u201cI didn’t want things to go too far in that direction and be\neasily breakable,\u201d she says. \u201cBut on the other hand, it was an illusion of\ngreat delicacy that I wanted to achieve with these pieces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the precision of laser cutting,\nStephanie knows that she\u2019ll have consistency when ordering multiples of any one\nframe\u2014and important consideration because of how the paintings must align with\ncertain elements of the frame. And no minimum quantity is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m not mass producing my pieces, and\nsince each one is a custom one-of-a-kind piece of art, I need to be able to\norder just a few at a time,\u201d she says. \u201cI don’t want to be tearing my hair out\nover how accomplish this, so the ease of quoting with Ponoko is very important\nfor me to minimize overhead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building A Recognizable Brand Image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What makes Stephanie\u2019s work particularly\ninteresting is the sense of movement that\u2019s found not only in the paintings but\nalso the frames. There\u2019s a grace about the shapes, and so it\u2019s no surprise to\nlearn that Stephanie has been a dancer for almost two decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI use the experience of how the human body\nmoves and emotes to create a bridge into my artwork so that not only do the\nhumans dance across the page but the branches of the trees also move with a\nsinuous grace, and the arrangement of inanimate elements has a choreographed\nrhythm and flow,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Moment Of Suspension<\/a> (above), you can see how the twisting boughs of live oaks from the hills near Stephanie\u2019s home have inserted themselves into the paintings. \u201cGrowing up in California, I\u2019ve been surrounded by the wealth of natural inspiration all around me,\u201d she says. \u201cThe chaos of nature’s wild growth, and conversely the beauty of decay, echo in the textures and fractal patterns of my work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This distinctive view of nature showcased in her paintings combined\nwith the equally artistic frames has helped Stephanie get noticed by galleries.\nSince 2013, she\u2019s been a part of 30+ group exhibitions and has had seven solo\nexhibitions, with the latest coming up in December 2019 at the Modern Eden\nGallery in San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter hanging an installation, one\ngallery reported to me that their visitors were amazed to see the result,\u201d she\nsays. \u201cIt was unique and eye catching, and it drew people through the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
