A decade ago, he began building vintage-industrial lamps as a hobby. But after leaving a very corporate job in 2012, his pastime evolved into a more fulfilling career. Today, he runs <a href=\"https:\/\/tungstencustoms.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Tungsten Customs<\/a>, a full-fledged fabrication shop that seamlessly fuses modern and vintage styles to produce original and made-to-order lighting, furniture and housewares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether it is an original, custom-built or\ncollaboratively designed object, the philosophy of Tungsten Customs is simple,\u201d\nJeremy says. \u201cEveryday objects should be beautiful, functional and accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reimagining Nixie Clocks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Jeremy started making his Nixie Tube\nclocks, he realized that it was very hard to find a minimalist design. \u201cAll I\ncould find were steampunk or flashy acrylic models,\u201d he says. \u201cI find the soft\nglow of Nixie Tubes suits a midcentury aesthetic, so I decided to mirror that\nin my designs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-2-Noir-Left.jpg\" alt=\"Tungsten Customs Nixie Clock 2 - Noir Left\" class=\"wp-image-66231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-2-Noir-Left.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-2-Noir-Left-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After deciding on the aesthetic style, he had\nto determine what kind of manufacturing best suited his ideas. \u201cI needed a way\nto have a uniform manufacturing process for the back of my clocks in order to\nhold the mechanical components (buttons and power jack) and be clearly labeled,\u201d\nhe says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-3-Noir-Back.jpg\" alt=\"Tungsten Customs Nixie Clock 3 - Noir Back\" class=\"wp-image-66232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-3-Noir-Back.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-3-Noir-Back-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCNC would have been too slow, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/laser-cutting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">laser cutting<\/a> was the obvious choice,\u201d he continues. \u201cI selected Ponoko because they make the process very simple; there\u2019s no playing with laser cutter settings or optimizing tool paths. This lets me leave the technical aspects to the professionals so I can focus on my designs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Jeremy produces these clocks in bulk, price is obviously a major factor. He needed a material for the clock backs that not only looks the part but also performs well and keeps costs in check. \u201cI chose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/show-material\/81-hardboard-gloss-both-sides#main-image\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">hardboard<\/a> because it takes engraving well, is easily sanded and drilled, and is uniform and stable,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While he\u2019s got the laser cut backing for the\nclocks dialed in, there\u2019s still the issue of how he crafts the main body of the\nclock from a solid block of select hardwoods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-4-Epoch-Front.jpg\" alt=\"Tungsten Customs Nixie Clock 4 - Epoch Front\" class=\"wp-image-66233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-4-Epoch-Front.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-4-Epoch-Front-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tungsten-Customs-Nixie-Clock-4-Epoch-Front-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen first figuring out how to hollow out the bodies for my clocks, I realized that I could have templates cut from thick transparent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/laser-cutting\/acrylic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">acrylic<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cI had these made years ago, and I still use the original ones on every production run. This has saved countless dollars and hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this kind of creative thinking, Jeremy has been able to take advantage of all the capabilities of laser cutting.
