Introducing Matte White Acrylic To The NZ Catalog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Acrylic is the most popular material for laser cutting<\/a> for a reason\u2014make that several! It\u2019s super versatile; you can design anything from electronics enclosures<\/a> and robots<\/a> to jewelry<\/a> and wedding decorations<\/a>. Plus, it\u2019s affordable, so you can keep costs low and, if you\u2019re creating a product to sell<\/a>, this means a higher profit margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while we love the sleek, shiny acrylic, there\u2019s\nsomething really special about matte acrylic, too. It has a luxe vibe, giving\nthe pieces an air of sophistication. The matte finish is reminiscent of a\npainted or metallic finish, and it keeps those pesky fingerprints at bay\u2014an\nimportant consideration if your product will be handled a lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matte White Acrylic For Electronics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Acrylic is ideal for laser cutting<\/a> electronic project boxes, especially when the design includes clips to fasten the flat pieces (shown above) together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To simply the box making, we used this site<\/a> to create the file. Simply input the dimensions, and the program generates a file for 3mm acrylic (the most common acrylic thickness used).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall we found this a pretty neat way to quickly\nmake a box, as the clips hold the box together without any need for glue or\nfasteners. That said, this design didn\u2019t yield the most solid of boxes, so some\niterations may be needed for an enclosure that\u2019s more structurally sound. While\nthis box as an example of how clips can be used to fasten pieces, it\u2019s easy to\nsee how the clips can also be integrated into other designs that need assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind that engraving on white doesn\u2019t show up that well, so if you want engraved designs or text to pop (especially if you\u2019re labeling buttons on electronics), you\u2019ll need add a bit of color<\/a> to engraved areas after making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matte White Acrylic For Jewelry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Acrylic is highly suited toward laser cutting\njewelry because it isn\u2019t too heavy (you know those super heaving earrings that\ndrag you down), but also isn\u2019t too light (such as the very thin bamboo pendants\nthat don\u2019t often sit well on a necklace). Geometric designs always look great laser cut,\nand these layered triangles are no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast to the geometric shapes of the\nearrings above, this ring showcases the smooth circle of the ring with a few\n\u201cdiamonds,\u201d because we all know they\u2019re a girl\u2019s best friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this pendant, you can see the difference with laser engraving a solid shape on the left vs. a fully laser cut piece on the right. The engraving is subtle, so if you want it to be more visible, you\u2019ll need to add a bit of color<\/a> via hand finishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Available: White Matte Acrylic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With a matte finish on one side and a glossy finish on the\nother, this acrylic is hard and stiff as plastics go. Because it is so rigid,\nacrylic is sensitive to stress concentrations, especially if parts are small or\nthin. Details should not be smaller than 1mm\/0.04″ as they are likely to\nbe too fragile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maker Tips: <\/strong>Creating structures from acrylic can be tricky due to variations in the material thickness. Creating a design that can accommodate variations in the material thickness is the best way to go. This post on making interlocking designs<\/a> can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally the laser cuts at a slight taper (1-2 degrees)\nsince the laser beam is shaped like a cone. The tapering causes one side to be\nslightly smaller than the other side. The taper is almost unnoticeable in\n1\/8″ material; the thicker the material, the more noticeable the taper.\nWhen using laser cut parts such as wheels or gears, you might need to position\nthe parts in an alternating pattern so that the tapers \u201ccancel out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
