Well, it\u2019s true with Skoobot, a tiny robot for playing games,\nexploring robotics and learning programming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brainchild of William (Bill) Weiler, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdsupply.com\/william-weiler-engineering\/skoobot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Skoobot<\/a> was created after he saw kids at an ADHD camp interact around a game of fighting spinning tops. \u201cOlder kids were involved and engaged with the younger ones,\u201d Bill says. \u201cThey chatted freely about the tops and the games. I realized I could do the same, maybe better, with something more sophisticated and focused, perhaps involving ideas from education and ADHD research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a one-inch-cube robot that is\nfull of cool tech such as Bluetooth Low Energy wireless, a 32-bit processor,\ndistance sensor, microphone and buzzer. Controlled through an Android phone or\na Raspberry Pi, Skoobot can play fun games such as capture the flag and\nrobotroll. And since all its software is open source, it can be modified by\nanyone to suit specific purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/283523099\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skoobot\u2019s processor is powerful enough to\nhandle the math needed for spoken word recognition, and its buzzer can create\nmeaningful feedback to the user. Once children (or those young at heart!) are\ndrawn in by the cuteness and novelty of the robot, they can play cooperative\ngames, with each person taking a turn. The game could be to solve a maze, for\nexample, or help the robots communicate with a beep-based language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur special focus is helping kids on the Autism\nspectrum gain interpersonal skills through social games involving robots,\u201d Bill\nsays,\u201d so the cooperative game should be optimized for fun and social\nlearning to appeal to all ages and skill levels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Combining 3D Printing With Laser Cutting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both laser cutting and 3D printing are pretty awesome.\nSo how do you know which one to use? 3D printing is ideal for small complex\nforms, whereas laser cutting is perfect for simple parts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both of these digital manufacturing methods are handy for custom products where you don&#8217;t need millions of units or you\u2019re in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/how-to-make\/how-to-make-a-product-prototype\/\" target=\"_blank\">prototyping<\/a> stage and need to iterate. With 3D printing and laser cutting, there are no upfront tooling costs like with many other manufacturing processes. Take injection molding, for example. It\u2019s super cheap if you make millions of parts, but it\u2019s generally not cost effective for smaller quantities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using a clever combo of the 3D printing + laser cutting means it\u2019s possible to build really neat things without excessive spending\u2014an important consideration, especially if you\u2019re designing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/business-tips\/create-a-product-to-sell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">a product to sell<\/a> and need to keep costs low to hit a target price point or profit margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When choosing which method to employ, you must weigh the advantages vs the disadvantages of each. Bill started with 3D printing for all parts, but notes that \u201ceven the cheapest options were expensive,\u201d even for the tiny motor mounts, which were $5 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the main body (the bright green cube)\nremains 3D printed because of the complexity of the desired shape, he began\nlooking toward laser cutting for some component pieces\u2014specifically the motor\nmounts and wheels. \u201cBy switching to laser cutting for motor mounts,\u201d Bill says,\n\u201cthe cost for two went from $10 for 3D printing to $0.22 for laser cutting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Skoobot-Robot-2-Motor-Mounts.jpg\" alt=\"Skoobot Robot 2 - Motor Mounts\" class=\"wp-image-66119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Skoobot-Robot-2-Motor-Mounts.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Skoobot-Robot-2-Motor-Mounts-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Skoobot-Robot-2-Motor-Mounts-768x504.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see the motor mounts above are bent at a 90-degree angle. But laser cutting happens with flat sheets of materials. So what gives? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill had to do a wee bit of finishing on his own, heating up the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/show-material\/66-delrin-white\" target=\"_blank\">0.8mm white Delrin<\/a> (a popular, strong material often chosen for components on mechanical and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/design-ideas\/laser-cut-engineering-projects-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">electronics projects<\/a>) used to make the mounts and then bending them to the angle desired. To streamline the process and save time, he created a handy jig to bend the parts consistently. Check out how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q5JAKtDWIgs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the relatively small quantity Bill is building,\nthe dramatic cost savings from 3D printing to laser cutting justifies the extra\ntime spent on finishing and assembly of the motor mounts. But if the quantity\nsold grows significantly, this added step would not only take a larger time\ncommitment but also need to be built into the overall timing schedule\u2014something\nto consider if there are hard dates by which orders must be fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another little piece of finishing Bill does is with the wheels. \u201cI use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/show-material\/145-styrene-white\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">styrene<\/a> for the wheels, mostly because of the available thickness of this plastic and the price,\u201d he explains. \u201cI found it to be really suited for what I use it for. So another option would be to make the basic gluing labor\ntasks a part of kitset build instructions. A simple shift of workload could\nsave tons of time en masse without compromising the overall user experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding Inspiration\u2014And Success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A (mostly) self-taught engineer, Bill spends\nhis days as a prototype and firmware engineer while his spare time is dedicated\nto tinkering and building to fulfill his need for creativity. He started with\nthe local robotics club and learned firmware, followed by electronics and then\nphysical design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like most creatives, Bill says his ideas flow\nwhen the brain finally has a chance to relax. \u201cI usually start thinking about\ndesign in bed, or in the car, or in the shower or anytime I get bored,\u201d he says.\n\u201cI then design the part in my head and imagine how it fits together. For really\ntough designs, I model them in Fusion 360 first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once his ideas take shape, he preps for the digital manufacturing process that works best. For laser cutter projects, he dives into Inkscape to prep the files. But he says learning it was a bit challenging and recommends watching YouTube videos to get started. But if quantity grows, he could save even more money by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/digital-manufacturing\/definitive-guide-nesting-software-laser-cut-designs\/\" target=\"_blank\">nesting<\/a> the pieces so they\u2019re arranged with shared cutting lines. His initial $1,000 funding goal was far exceed, as 31 backers pledged $4,559 to bring Skoobot to life.
