ZQ Merino Designed Event Badges To Align With Their Values\u2014While Making A Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the New Zealand Merino Company launched ZQ\nMerino in 2007, the bar was set high. As the world\u2019s first ethical wool brand,\nZQ provides a marque of integrity for growers committed to the cessation of\nmulesing, animal welfare, fiber quality, environmental sustainability and\nsocial responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when the company hosted ZQ Vanguard Wool, a week-long event at Stanford University that brought together many representatives of the company\u2019s value chain and customers in one place to look at the future of the natural fiber industry and establish collaborations and alignments, not just any name badge<\/a> would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"ZQ<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Not only did event attendees need admittance\ncredentials, but these event badges must also align with ZQs corporate values.\nTraditional event badges\u2014paper name tags housed in plastic sleeves attached to\nlanyards made from synthetic materials\u2014wouldn\u2019t work. That\u2019s when Julia King\nbegan looking for alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs part of my creative role, we work on a\nlarge variety of print, product, physical and digital projects,\u201d she says. \u201cWe wanted\nto look for ways to ensure the week had a wow factor and that we stood out\nwhile using natural products.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To meet the design requirements and have the right aesthetics, Julia chose to laser cut<\/a> the badges from technoply beech wood<\/a>. \u201cWe care about the environment and like to work with natural products,\u201d she says. \u201cWe also wanted ensure the event badges looked great and were easily readable, all while staying away from plastic materials. The technoply beech wood was a natural alternative, and we were able to get great precision and consistency with this product without it being bulky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design was intentionally kept simple with \u201cjust the right amount of nothing\u201d as Julia says. The upper right hand corner contains a line drawing of the attendee\u2019s country of origin. Centered vertically on the left side is the person\u2019s name and company. And centered horizontally along the bottom edge is the event logo. The result is a modern event badge that combines the warmth of the wood with sleek design. Not only does keeping the design minimal look great, it\u2019s also a clever way to reduce making costs<\/a>. Smart!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working With Ponoko<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After finding Ponoko via Google, Julia was\nattracted to the easy quoting and ordering system, and the no-minimum-order-size\nwas plus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe use design<\/a> thinking a lot in our creative process, so we are constantly looking for better ways of doing things and like to prototype, prototype, prototype,\u201d Julia explains. \u201cThe instant quoting was great, and we were able to order a quick prototype<\/a> to establish material and quality. We chose Ponoko because of better material choices, better consistency and precision\/quality of the laser cutting. Quick turn around times and being able to control whole process as a designer was perfect for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while there was a little bump in the road\nat the beginning when the Ponoko website was on the fritz, a making voucher and\nlots of follow up kept Julia\u2019s time-sensitive project on track. \u201cThis led to\nfantastic, more personal customer service relationship that carried on\nthroughout the rest of the ongoing project,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setting New Standards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As a wool marketing company, ZQ connects\ngrowers to global brands to establish long-term relationships and sustainable\npricing and supply. During the ZQ Vanguard Wool event, the company looked at\ndisruption, technology and the role of future consumers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"ZQ<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn overarching theme was where our industry\nsits in the global plastic crisis and how we can provide a natural solution in\nnew markets, for new users and new uses for wool as the world transitions away\nfrom fossil fuel fibers,\u201d Julia says. \u201cThe week-long program included many\nStanford faculty and guest speakers who were applying theory in their business\nor had been affected by or changed their businesses to avoid disruption in our\nchanging world. It was seemingly a relative first for Stanford University to\nhave such global representation of an entire industry value chain, so it was\nincredibly beneficial to get alignment at a time where there is incredible\nopportunity but also major threats to a natural animal produced fiber.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
