Once you see the boomboxes he makes from vintage luggage at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dandelionsound.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dandelion Sound<\/a>, you\u2019ll understand why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVintage wooden suitcases provide great esthetics and decent sound,\u201d Aleksey explains. \u201cI&#8217;ve seen other people make similar designs, but I take it further by creating functional art that is way more than sum of the parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most other vintage suitcase boomboxes simply have speakers directly installed into the case walls. Then he fills it with efficient, high-quality speakers that perfectly fit the enclosure and style. \u201cThere are no cheapo drivers here!\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Next, he makes sure there\u2019s sufficient power for the sound emitted from the speakers to fill a large room. Then he adds in all the tech requirements today\u2019s buyers want: Bluetooth 4.0, AUX input (for maximum flexibility), dual USB charging port and LI-ION rechargeable batteries that last up to 24 hours on one charge.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he installs the laser-cut custom accents and details to give it character and unique style. Aleksey says the biggest problem is having sufficient power and getting good sound from an imperfect enclosure. He admits that much of the process used to be trial and error with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/how-to-make\/how-to-make-a-product-prototype\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prototyping<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/how-to-make\/how-to-design-an-industrial-product\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">design<\/a> process, but now it\u2019s become much easier to obtain consistent results that are both functional and beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been making these cases for quite some time now; long enough to learn that creating functional art is more involved than throwing some components together according to the schematics,\u201d Aleksey explains. \u201cEach build is a creative process. He was attracted to the easy quoting and ordering system, and since he\u2019s located in San Francisco, he loved being able to drop by the factory for pick up.<\/p>\n<p>Quick turnaround was also important to Aleksey. \u201cI went from drawing to ready-made parts in four days,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>What tips does he have for other makers who are getting started with laser cutting? \u201cOptimize your lines for speedy cuts and create layouts to get the most out of the given material,\u201d he says.
