The cards were too big, corners were too sharp, and the text alignment was off. (The blurring in the images is for James&#8217; privacy, not the result of the lasercutter.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jamescard1\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39030\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard1.jpg 864w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard1-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard1-768x401.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second cut fixed most of the problems with the first round, but the cards \u2014 made of 3mm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/show-material\/79-acrylic-black\" target=\"_blank\">black acrylic<\/a> \u2014 were too thick. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I went on interviews and <a href=\"http:\/\/jamesstokebrand.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/10\/second-cut-is-better-than-the-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">passed out this card<\/a>. It didn&#8217;t go over well\u2026 (laugh).  My career and training is in software engineering, and the people who would be hiring me aren&#8217;t impressed with business cards,&#8221; James explains. &#8220;But I still found a job a couple months later.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward a year, and James has come back to his lasercut business card design, which he&#8217;s calling Project Vanity on his blog <a href=\"http:\/\/jamesstokebrand.wordpress.com\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Misadventures in Software<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He tried out some different design layouts on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/show-material\/72-acrylic-clear\" target=\"_blank\">clear acrylic<\/a> which comes in thinner sizes. &#8220;Unfortunately, using clear acrylic makes it impossible to scan the QR code. So for business cards, these make interesting failures,&#8221; James says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jamescard2\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard2.jpg 1175w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard2-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard2-768x320.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard2-1024x427.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1175px) 100vw, 1175px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another mishap was using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/show-material\/92-petg-clear\" target=\"_blank\">PETG<\/a>, a clear and flexible but delicate plastic. James took his invisible, broken cards in stride: &#8220;What can I say. The cards are invisible! PETG isn\u2019t a good material for business cards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard3.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jamescard3\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard3.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard3-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard3-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard3-1024x585.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1068px) 100vw, 1068px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>His next experiment turned out better, resulting in an embossed look by cutting away the background instead of the design. &#8220;The cards look great, but it took quite a bit of cleanup to make them presentable,&#8221; James notes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard4.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jamescard4\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard4.jpg 1252w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard4-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard4-768x417.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard4-1024x556.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1252px) 100vw, 1252px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/make-and-sell\/materials\/ponoko-united-states?kind=Paper&#038;mode=materials\" target=\"_blank\">cardstock <\/a>was added to the materials catalog, it seemed like a natural fit for a business card. He tried out all three cardstock colors, adding a vector line engraving to the design on the white ones. &#8220;I think this made the [white] cards stand out over the black and the red,&#8221; he says. &#8220;But the QR codes don&#8217;t scan because there isn&#8217;t enough contrast between the code and the paper.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard5.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jamescard5\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard5.jpg 1269w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard5-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard5-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard5-1024x555.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1269px) 100vw, 1269px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then James came across the <a href=\"http:\/\/fffff.at\/qr-stenciler-and-qr-hobo-codes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">QR Code Stencil Generator<\/a>, a program originally developed by the team at F.A.T. (Free Art &#038; Technology) as part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/2011\/07\/20\/hobo-codes-for-digital-nomads\/\" target=\"_blank\">21st Century update to hobo code communication<\/a>. He used the Stencil Generator to make some new versions with the QR code completely cut out instead of engraved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"jamescard6a\" width=\"100%\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-39099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a.jpg 1506w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jamescard6a-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1506px) 100vw, 1506px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>For those of you interested in creating your own lasercut business cards with Ponoko, James has some sage words of advice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1) Always print the design on paper to ensure that its the correct size and configuration.<\/p>\n<p>2) Round the corners of the card. Laser cut corners can be quite sharp.<\/p>\n<p>3) Pay attention to text and graphic alignment. This is subtle but important to making a good design great.<\/p>\n<p>4) Don&#8217;t forget to convert your text to Paths!<\/p>\n<p>5) Never give up.
