Considering high consumer demand for products commonly packaged in plastics  such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plastic_recycling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">PET, PE-HD, PVC, etc<\/a> &#8211; it makes sense to turn that waste into  something usable. Tyler McNaney a mechanical engineering student at Vermont Technical College has come up with <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/rocknail\/filabot-plastic-filament-maker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Filabot and a Kickstarter campaign<\/a> to make plastic recycling for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/3d-printing\" target=\"_blank\">3D printing<\/a> a reality!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/plastic-recycler.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33583\" title=\"plastic recycler\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/plastic-recycler.png\" alt=\"Filabot\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/plastic-recycler.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/plastic-recycler-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/plastic-recycler-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Filabot is a small desktop extruder that takes plastic chips (cut up, for example from soft drink, milk or detergent bottles), heats and fuses them together in an extrusion for use in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fused_deposition_modeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FDM 3D printers<\/a> such as Makerbot.<\/p>\n<p>With 15 days to go at time of press, Filabot have already achieved their target funding goal of $10,000. However I believe &#8211; aiming for closed loop means of production, even at small volumes, is a noble environmental goal and I encourage others to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/rocknail\/filabot-plastic-filament-maker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">contribute to the Filabot project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>David is an industrial designer from New Zealand.
