I used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blender.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Blender<\/a> to add some lettering, but it was a pain because I&#8217;m not really used to working with the Blender UI.<\/p>\n<p>Lucky for me, there&#8217;s now a solution for generating 3D text in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">OpenSCAD<\/a>: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:9551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">OpenSCAD Font Importer 1.1<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/pipakin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pipakin<\/a>. It&#8217;s still under development (and requires a bit of compiling) so some users may not find this to be an easier solution, but it&#8217;s a must-have if you love using OpenSCAD.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to get started.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>These instructions will work in general for whichever platform you&#8217;re using, but specifically I&#8217;m using Mac OS X 10.6. (In my experience, when compiling open source projects like FreeType under Windows, there can be&#8230; hiccups. \ud83d\ude42 )<\/p>\n<p><strong>Download these packages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/download.savannah.gnu.org\/releases\/freetype\/freetype-2.4.5.tar.gz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FreeType 2.4.5<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freetype.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Main site<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; freetype-py (<a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/p\/freetype-py\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Main site<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.python.org\/ftp\/python\/2.7.2\/python-2.7.2-macosx10.6.dmg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Python 2.7.2<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.python.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Main site<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; full_ddump.py and font_base.scad from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:9551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Install and compile:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; Install Python<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Extract freetype-2.4.5.tar.gz<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Extract freetype-py-0.3.1.tar.gz<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Open a terminal window and do this:\n<ul>\n<li>&gt; cd ~\/Downloads\/freetype-2.4.5\/<\/li>\n<li>&gt; .\/configure<\/li>\n<li>&gt; make<\/li>\n<li>&gt; sudo make install<\/li>\n<li>&gt; cd ~\/Downloads\/freetype-py-0.3.1\/<\/li>\n<li>&gt; python setup.py install<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Create a font file:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; Pick a TrueType font already installed on your system, or download a public domain one from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FontSpace<\/a> and copy it to your Downloads folder<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; In your terminal window, do this, changing HelveticaLight to whichever font you chose:\n<ul>\n<li>&gt; cd ~\/Downloads\/<\/li>\n<li>&gt; python full_ddump.py -f HelveticaLight.ttf -o FontHelveticaLight.scad -m FontHelveticaLight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Okay, you&#8217;re ready to use the font. All you have to do now is add &#8220;include &lt;FontHelveticaLight.scad&gt;&#8221; to the OpenSCAD file you&#8217;re working on, then create each individual letter by calling FontHelveticaLight() like this: FontHelveticaLight(&#8220;A&#8221;);<\/p>\n<p>Now you can move and transform the text as you like, and personalize existing models as you see fit. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/hoeken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">hoeken<\/a>&#8216;s chunky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:1813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">bottle opener<\/a> with text added:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/openscadfonts_woo.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26765\" title=\"Woo!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/openscadfonts_woo.png\" alt=\"Woo!\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/openscadfonts_woo.png 1390w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/openscadfonts_woo-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/openscadfonts_woo-768x439.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/openscadfonts_woo-1024x585.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1390px) 100vw, 1390px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rendering process can be slow, so if you&#8217;re doing more than a few letters pipakin recommends generating your string as a separate model and merging it in later.
