transported as digital files.<\/p>\n<p>PRODUCTION: Digital fabrication technology turns digital design files into physical objects.<\/p>\n<p>SALES: Online marketplaces, e-commerce software, and craft fairs let anyone price and sell their goods.<\/p>\n<p>COMMUNITY: Blogs, social media, email, and meetups make marketing free and fun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full design was happening 2 ways: the creation of Custom goods and the creation of Customized goods.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, goods can be produced with 3D printing\u00a0\u2014 either on a personal 3D printer or via outsourcing to a 3D printing service.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25581\" title=\"rapidcon4\" <a href=\"http:\/\/glomusproducts.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Glomus<\/a>, a group of industrial design students, to rehabilitate broken and discarded objects of mass-manufacture with 3D printed &#8216;product prostheses&#8217;.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25638\" title=\"rapidcon7\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon7.png 1081w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon7-300x222.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon7-768x569.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon7-1024x759.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1081px) 100vw, 1081px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They used a MakerBot Cupcake CNC to bring new life to what had been tossed in the garbage \u2014 a broken wine glass is repaired with a 3D printed stem, a discarded bowl is turned into an ashtray, new handles are printed for a set of flatware. (Looks pretty good for a DIY 3D printer!)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25642\" title=\"rapidcon8\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon8.png 1048w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon8-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon8-768x566.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon8-1024x754.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1048px) 100vw, 1048px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My second example told the famous story of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglif.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Glif<\/a> \u2014 how two guys with no industrial design experience and no start-up capital created a wildly successful iPhone accessory.<\/p>\n<p>Going back to the 4 factors that make the democratization of product design possible:<\/p>\n<p>DESIGN: Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt first made a digital 3D model from their sketches<\/p>\n<p>PRODUCTION: Then they ordered a 3D printed prototype from Shapeways and refined the design.<\/p>\n<p>SALES: They used Kickstarter to raise funds for mass-production of their design and created 3D printed versions for their $50 backers.<\/p>\n<p>COMMUNITY: Tech and maker blogs supported the project immediately. And long story short, they met their goal of $10,000 in under 1.5 hrs. When the month of funding ended, over 5,200 people had given over $137,000.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25651\" title=\"rapidcon9\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon9.png 1090w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon9-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon9-768x423.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon9-1024x564.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1090px) 100vw, 1090px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My final example of custom products looked at 3D printing as just one tool which could be combined with other digital fabrication technologies to create almost anything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ponoko<\/a> lets you develop products using 3D printing, laser cutting, and electronic hardware. Each part of the product (except the electronic hardware) is fabricated on demand, allowing for the creation of custom products that let people *customize* parts of the product.<\/p>\n<p>Above you see a furniture set created with CNC routing and a 3D printed and lasercut lamp sitting on the table. By tweaking the design files, people created customized versions of this lamp, shown below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25652\" title=\"rapidcon10\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon10.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon10.png 1025w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon10-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon10-768x596.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon10-1024x794.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1025px) 100vw, 1025px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This lead me into 3 examples of customized goods, the creation of which takes no design skill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25653\" title=\"rapidcon11\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon11.png 1085w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon11-300x210.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon11-768x538.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon11-1024x717.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1085px) 100vw, 1085px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluid-forms.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fluid Forms<\/a>, working with <a href=\"http:\/\/i.materialise.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">i.materialise<\/a>, lets you customize a range of products including these 3D printed silver cufflinks.<\/p>\n<p>By using data from Google maps, Fluid Forms lets consumers choose a favorite topography to be the design. (My map selection shows the Badlands in South Dakota.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25656\" title=\"rapidcon12\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon12.png 1069w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon12-300x232.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon12-768x594.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon12-1024x792.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1069px) 100vw, 1069px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lightpoem from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeways.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shapeways<\/a> is a customizable lamp that lets consumers type the design.<\/p>\n<p>An applet that run on the consumer&#8217;s computer renders a 3D model that changes in real time based on each letter typed. Then the consumer just choses a material and color and orders a 3D printed product.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25658\" title=\"rapidcon13\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon13.png 1064w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon13-300x231.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon13-768x591.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon13-1024x788.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1064px) 100vw, 1064px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For my last example, I looked at Ponoko&#8217;s approach to mass-customization \u2014 the recently announced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/app-gateway\/awesome-apps\" target=\"_blank\">App Gateway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Developers can create &#8216;making apps&#8217; that are integrated with Ponoko, giving people access to not only 3D printing, but laser cutting and CNC routing as well \u2014 directly from an app.<\/p>\n<p>The first app available is 123D from Autodesk. It&#8217;s a free, 3D modeling tool that lets users design from scratch or start from one of the many pre-made starter designs. A &#8220;make&#8221; button is built right into the app and lets consumers get their model made.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25660\" title=\"rapidcon14\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon14.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon14.png 791w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon14-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ponoko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/rapidcon14-768x458.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I touched on what makes making so compelling to people and what &#8216;make-it-yourself&#8217; means for the product design and product retail industry.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to everyone who came up to talk to me after the presentation.
