With projects like <a href=\"http:\/\/vision.ucsd.edu\/~blaxton\/sneakey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">SNEAKEY<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/schuyler\/lockpicks-by-open-locksport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Open Locksport<\/a> getting the huge press they have in the last year, it&#8217;s been a fait accompli that someone would create a procedural method for generating real world keys.<\/p>\n<p>All-around hacker <a href=\"http:\/\/eclecti.cc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nirav Patel<\/a> has done just that. His <a href=\"http:\/\/eclecti.cc\/hardware\/physical-keygen-duplicating-house-keys-on-a-3d-printer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Physical Keygen<\/a> project combines his <a href=\"http:\/\/reprap.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rep-Rap<\/a> (an open source <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fused_deposition_modeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">FDM <\/a> style 3d printing machine) with code developed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openscad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">OpenSCAD<\/a> (an open source 3d modeling script). Using a combination of measurements taken from a few household keys and a reference chart of manufacturers&#8217; key bit charts he developed the program to take some simple\u00a0information\u00a0about any key and develop a working model of it in CAD strong enough to turn an ordinary lock.
