Custom bike pedal and strap

Sick of metal cages destroying your sweet hipster boots? This custom pedal design fixes this problem with a sweet shoe friendly strap design.

Seen here is the prototype/proof of concept. It's 3D printed in Rainbow Ceramic but it should be printed from Stainless Steel for use. Choose Gold plate for more bling.
The strap should be made from dark brown or black 0.098" leather and riveted together.

Should fit on a standard platform pedal that accepts toe clips like this - http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=42872&category=114.NB I havent tested them on this brand

Hole centers are 54mm.

QUICK OVERVIEW
Download (and customize) the design files for the laser cut chassis parts, and make them yourself from:

0.177"/4.5mm Acrylic - http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/materials#24

MY COMMENTS

After making an Acrylic Makerbot chasis and fully assembling it with all the electronics etc, I found there were a few issues in the files. There was one bit missing and some holes that didn't line up. The other main issue with making in acrylic was that the thickness is 0.5mm less than the Birch that Makerbot Industries use. This resulted in the bolts bottoming out at the end of the t-slot. I have increase the length of these slots and added some radii to hopefully reduce the risk of cracking. I also used rubber washers on the case so I wouldn't over tighten it.

Makerbot Designs for Birch Plywood and Bamboo

QUICK OVERVIEW
Download (and customize) the design files for the laser cut chassis parts, and make them yourself from:

- Birch Plywood: http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/show-material/84-veneer-core-double-sided-birch

- Bamboo: http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/show-material/82-bamboo-natural

MY COMMENTS

So in anticipation of getting the "Basic Electronics Kit" - http://www.ponoko.com/showroom/MakerBot/cupcake-cnc-basic-electronics-kit-4242
from Makerbot, I whipped up a Birch plywood body to see how it would work. The original files in the Makerbot showroom have the tabs and holes drawn for 5mm material. The Ponoko Birch measures 5.3mm so I figured that with laser kerf the holes would come out at about 5.2mm. I guessed that would be close enough to get body together. Well, that 0.1mm difference was enough to be difficult. Having worked with plywood for many years I knew I could use a rubber mallet to nudge the pieces to together without anything breaking. If I were using the bamboo this would not have been possible as it is not a ply construction and therefore can break along the grain, especially where a short grain situation created. There were some cosmetic issues because of the tight joints which I have shown in the 3rd photo. some of the veneer around the holes broke out but it is nothing that will affect the structural performance of the machine.

So anyway, I have adjusted the files so that the holes for the tabs are drawn at 5.3mm. This should work better with the Birch and Bamboo in the Ponoko catalog. There may be other areas where the 0.3mm difference in material thickness multiplies to cause tight parts. For instance, the panel that covers the power supply seemed tight but I can't make adjustments there until I get a power supply and the other hardware to know how that part goes together. And of course thickness variations in the material can make things difficult at any time.

Card Holder Wallet

These files are the cutting pattern for this leather Card Holder Wallet. Fits your credit cards, business cards and some folded cash. The flap folds over holding everything inside and I have never had an issue of stuff falling out in 2 years of use. The design is easily hand stitched together. The stitching holes are cut by the laser so you get a perfect straight line with even spacing.

I used approx 1mm/0.04" thick leather for the wallet.

The wallet in the photos has a pattern raster engraved in the leather. I have removed this from the file but you are free to add your own. It looks sweet with engraving.<br></br><img alt="Wallet_002_sml_showroom_image" src="http://static3.ponoko.com/design_images/images/27/36cbc06d-84ac-372a-9940-387d611fb70e/wallet_002_sml_showroom_image.jpg?1265412613" />

Leather Ipod Case

These files are the cutting pattern for this leather iPod touch case. The design is in 2 halves which can be easily hand stitched together. The stitching holes are cut by the laser so you get a perfect straight line with even spacing.

I used approx 1mm/0.04" thick leather for the case.

The case in the photos has a pattern raster engraved in the leather. I have removed this from the file but you are free to add your own. It looks sweet with engraving.

This design would probably fit an iPhone as well but it would be tight. The leather would wear in over time and the perfect fit would be obtained.<br></br><img alt="Dsc_3215_showroom_image" src="http://static0.ponoko.com/design_images/images/27/203a2fe2-eb08-3eda-8196-1d8afd4c865b/dsc_3215_showroom_image.jpg?1265411873" />

Camera Strap 40" x 1/2"

I made this strap for my camera because I was tired of the bright yellow Nikon sign hanging around my neck every time I went out shooting. So now I have this nice dark brown leather strap. It is 40" long and 1/2" wide.

It is made in 3 parts because I could only fit 32" in the laser cutter. I used black 1/4" Double Cap Steel rivets to connect it all together. Search ebay and you'll find them. Super cheap, super easy. Just hit them with a hammer and you are done. The split rings are 5/8" stainless rings from McMaster Carr.

This design does NOT make good use of a P3 sized piece of leather. You could maybe make 10 straps on one P3. Maybe you have friends who need straps or some other designs for leather.

You can make this on the Natural Russet leather in the catalog now. I would recommend requesting pre-dyed Russet leather though. (This is not made on the leather in the Ponoko catalog)<br></br><img alt="Strap-3_showroom_image" src="http://static0.ponoko.com/design_images/images/27/de05749b-b2b9-37e4-b6d6-5adbe6fdb997/strap-3_showroom_image.jpg?1265672694" />

Cantilever Laptop Stand

A stand for your laptop that raises the screen to a height that is better for your posture. The cantilever design allows space to place documents and other items keeping your desk free of clutter.

Overall dimensions w 360mm d 300mm h 170mm. Perfect for a Macbook Pro 15".

Requires some assembly and I recommend gluing it together to guarantee rigidity. Laser kerf not taken into account for this design.

Can be made on any 14"/6mm material. The design needs 2 P3 size pieces of material but there is room for other small items within the pieces.

Download it, hack it, sell it, do what ever. Send me pictures if you do make it.<br></br><img alt="Felt-1_showroom_image" src="http://static2.ponoko.com/design_images/images/27/7027cfbf-1c5e-347c-a88d-7d2384f286d1/felt-1_showroom_image.jpg?1249685238" />
