It is based off a mathematical, fractal curve originally discovered by Swedish mathematician Helge von Koch. Each set includes 4 coasters. A quirky set of two coasters. The coaster design is a Sierpinski carpet, an example of a fractal. The coasters are 4 mm thick, 90 mm square and are laser cut from Italian Poplar plywood sourced from sustainable plantation forests. To clean the coasters, wipe them clean with a damp cloth. They are not dishwasher safe and should not be soaked.

My "Islamic Fractal Star" pieces are all variations on the same design, meticulously assembled by combining an eight-fold fractal pattern with a classic Islamic eight-fold rosette pattern. The result is a mesmerizing pattern, part star, part tunnel, part web, and part flower. Look long enough and you will see patterns emerging at all different sizes and angles - squares, octagons, and rosettes, to name a few. A single traditional Islamic pattern was often realized in different mediums and styles. Three very common ones were two-color tile mosaics; outlines carved as stone screens, and interlaced versions carved as wood or plaster relief. This piece is the analog of a traditional outlined rendition of the design. Laser cut from Ponoko P1 (7" square) black card stock, everything except the outlines were cut away, leaving one continuous, barely-there piece. It is particularly well suited against a contrasting color background (e.g. hung on a brightly colored wall).
