Fleur-de-lis Shelf The words Fleur de Lis (or Fleur de Lys) translate into the English "flower of the lily”. It is a common decorative symbol with many meanings. Traditionally this symbol has been associated with the French monarchy and when used in this context it signifies perfection, light and life. Legends differ on the origin of the fleur; some stories say that Clovis, the Merovingian king of the Franks was presented with a lily by an angel, to represent purification, on his conversion to Christianity. Other tales tell that he adopted the symbol when water lilies showed him how to safely cross a river and leading to a battle victory. As a religious symbol the Fleur de Lis has been adopted as an emblem of the Virgin Mary, and some say the three petals represent the Holy Trinity. Additionally, due to it’s resemblance to a spear, the Fleur has also been adopted by several military units to signify martial power and strength. More recently, following Hurricane Katrina, the Fleur-de-lis has been widely used in New Orleans as a symbol of grassroots support for New Orleans' recovery and on July 9th. 2008, Louisiana’s governor signed a bill into law making the fleur-de-lis an official symbol of the state. For our purposes the Fleur is used to adorn this decorative shelf. At 38cm wide, 10cm high and 12cm deep, this is the perfect little shelf to hold perfume bottles or small items below a decorative mirror in a bathroom, or to display your treasured knick-knacks. Cut from 5.7mm. Cherry Veneer MDF, this shelf requires a light sanding before assembly which can be completed with regular white carpenters glue. Because this unit is 3 dimensional the thickness of material is very important. If you are not cutting this with Ponoko, please make sure you are using 5.7mm stock. Unit should also be sealed with a Danish oil stain or polyurethane before use.
