Directives: Rest Stool

• made to order
• exists only digitally until ordered
• manufacture as locally as possible
• ships flat
• press fit assembly
• cutouts cast shadows

Directives integrate language and poetry into the everyday environment, emphasizing the idea of design as authorship. Each piece is created around a concise statement to serve as a personal, daily reminder. Included in the line is a stool ("rest"), a desk ("work") and a mirror ("reflect").

Their manufacturing process is highly efficient because they exist only as digital files until ordered, and then are manufactured and shipped locally. Once an order is in place, it is manufactured and shipped from a facility that is local to the customer. They are flat packed and assembled by the user using only a mallet.

Every part is lasercut from flat materials. The dark, burnt edges, a natural result of the laser cutting process, are showcased as a graphical element that frames the form. The hollow cutout of the letterforms allows light to shine through and cast a shadow of the word on a nearby surface.<br></br><img alt="Reststool_onwhite_square_showroom_image" src="http://static2.ponoko.com/design_images/images/7970/dfee20a5-327b-3262-b411-400a16d693da/reststool_onwhite_square_showroom_image.png?1244238070" />

Chairs: Bertoia

Harry Bertoia bestows one-hundred ninety-six square inches of sleek, mid-century modernist wisdom in a piece for home and office. A hand-drawn interpretation of Bertoia's 1955 Diamond Chair for Knoll is transcribed onto black acrylic with a laser. The image is set right above a quote attributed to the sculptor: "The urge for good design is the same as the urge to go on living."

Designed to be assembled by the customer, the black image layer is clipped to an ivory backing sheet to heighten the contrast and add depth. Simple mini binder clips from any office supply store will suffice, while simultaneously providing a simple, clean way to hang the piece.

The pictures here show the piece both back-lit, which causes the ivory to glow, and mounted on a white wall, which causes the black acrylic to read as highly reflective. As the light changes throughout the day, the image will reinvent itself.

A great gift for your favorite designer, architect, or student!

To assemble: remove protective backing and excess material around edges. Poke letters out (carefully!) with x-acto knife or straight pin. Attach two pieces together with one mini binder clip in each corner. Remove silver handles from binder clips; leave two at top to hang piece.

14"x14"x1/4"
Approx. 3 lbs.
Black and ivory acrylic
Self-assembly
Signed and dated<br></br><img alt="1_showroom_image" src="http://static1.ponoko.com/design_images/images/14965/10936210-d2d2-3dcf-b4f8-f572bcaefa4c/1_showroom_image.jpg?1249413809" />

Chairs: Van der Rohe

L. Mies Van der Rohe bestows one-hundred ninety-six square inches of sleek, mid-century modernist wisdom upon home and office. A hand-drawn interpretation of Mies's 1929 Barcelona Chair for the German Pavilion at the International Exposition is transcribed onto black acrylic with a laser. The image is set right above a quote attributed to the architect: "A chair is a very difficult object. A skyscraper is almost easier.

Chairs: Eames

Charles and Ray Eames bestow one-hundred ninety-six square inches of sleek, mid-century modernist wisdom upon home and office. A hand-drawn interpretation of their 1946 Molded Plywood Lounge Chair for Herman Miller is transcribed onto black acrylic with a laser. The image is set right above a quote attributed to Charles: "A chair is a little piece of architecture one man can handle."

Designed to be assembled by the customer, the black image layer is clipped to an ivory backing sheet to heighten the contrast and add depth. Simple mini binder clips from any office supply store will suffice, while simultaneously providing a simple, clean way to hang the piece.
