Plain Clothes Pin

A vector of the wooden part of a clothes pin. To scale so you could actually make working copies if you wished. More of a starting point to make some customized clothes pins; make them into animals or other fun shapes. Perhaps some kind of wall art...

Half of the original clothes pin was 10mm D, 85mm long and 6mm high. If you want it to fit with a donor spring I suggest making them on 9mm-10mm thick materials.

Note: You can also download this file to see an example of sharing cutting lines to lower making costs. I went ahead and placed 30 onto a P1 sized template.

Filling Etch Then Sanding Test

Couple tests of white acrylic with black acrylic paint filled into etch. Followed by sanding down the entire face. In this case these tests had the protective paper etched through. I simply left it on and sanded it off along with the extra paint.

-Heavy raster used in file.

-black acrylic painted onto etched face and allowed to dry; entire face as then sanded until the etched image was revealed. The result is a dull white for the plastic that reminds me of bone somewhat.

-Overcoat of flat sealer was used. Perhaps a gloss coat would return some of the shine that is loss during sanding.

The result is I can't remove the paint with a finger nail and rubbing a moist paper towel doesn't cause the color to come off.

Note: One has to be careful sanding as the etch is not very deep and you can easily sand the image away with rougher grit sand paper. Having an outline or ridge on the outer edge of the image helps prevent loss of etchings due to over sanding and in general protects the ink better. See the skull with swords for example of sanding out the etch.<br></br><img alt="Etchtest1_showroom_image" src="http://static3.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/9a7875ff-cc96-3e1b-870f-e7f296846f72/etchtest1_showroom_image.jpg" />

Boat Instrument Panel

Instrument panel for sailing boat. Used existing instrument holes; sized to cover some slight damage of the underlying paint job.
Printed a 1to1 template out on paper and cut it out to test fit and placement beforehand.
We're seeing how wax crayon does as an etch fill, if it weathers poorly it's easy enough to repair/replace.

Materials Used:
Etched/cut 3mm white acrylic
Cut 1/16" thick neoprene rubber gaskets.

Robotic Arm Ponoko Ready File WIP

This is a start to getting:
http://www.ponoko.com/showroom/ClementFletchersPlace/open-source-robotic-arm-2674
From: http://www.oomlout.com
Open Source Robotic Arm optimized for Ponoko. Although you can cut this WIP file there are several steps to optimizing the layout to lower making costs. Could be quite a bit of savings so it'd be worth the time for someone making the design @ ponoko.
I have setup the design to conform to Ponoko's needs, regrouped parts for easier moving and moved a few spots of unneeded part overlap...

Here's some more changes I'd recommend take place in the file:

-Right now it's in a P3 sheet although this design might fit if re-nested into a P2 sheet; this will lower material cost and waste.

-Reorganize parts to share more cutlines. Lowers making cost.

-Remove shared overlapping cutlines. Lowers making cost.

-There are some more areas of unneeded part overlap that do not save money and might be simply small placement errors.

-Double check part dimensions to increase cutline sharing.
Some examples of uneven sides, the top of RARM-17 and the left side of part RARM-06A. There could be a reason for these that I'm unaware of?

-Couple circles that show as vector lines, double check that they shouldn't be cuts instead.

If you decide to make these changes to better this file for cutting in Ponokos system reupload the design for others to use. Let me know and I will link to the new file from this page.

Calico Jack Jolly Roger Vector

Free plan for the Jolly Roger flag used by Calico Jack; an English pirate of the early 18th Century.
More about Calico Jack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calico_Jack_Rackham

This file includes cutlines and two versions to etch either the background or the Jolly Roger design itself. The version with the jolly roger etched will look best as black acrylic and I have also included that as a necklace.

Note: You need to download the file and move the design of your choice into a fresh template as this file contains three versions.

These bowls are made from overlapping circles of acrylic. Good way to practice gluing acrylic together! I also had Ponoko make me some cardboard jigs which made the assembly much less frustrating. Although these bowls are more decorative in nature they do hold water. I'm considering putting two together to form a vase...

This is the Mst3shades: http://bit.ly/Mst3shades
file from creator gianteye: http://bit.ly/Giant_Eye
over on thingverse.com

I just went ahead and got it into a P1 template for any of the 3mm thick materials. This includes all the acrylic colors, hardboard, delrin and one of the bamboo (US hub). The 4mm single layer cardboard more than likely also has enough give to fit together off this file.

Notes: I increased the depth of the screw paths 2mm. I had to adjust the scaling after importing the original .dxf into illustrator and based the size on screw holes and the proper spacing for a 3mm thick material.

3-in-1 Mona Lisa

Did you know X-ray technology is currently allowing art historians to peer underneath famous works of art and see what might be hidden underneath? We may one day discover that Leonardo da Vinci first painted Mona Lisa as a bad ass pirate or perhaps a stealthy ninja assassin. No need to wait for that almost certain eventuality!

You get:
-Original Mona Lisa!
-Pirate Mona Lisa (with eyepatch and flintlock pistol)
-Ninja Mona Lisa (with katana and throwing star)

These are perfect for etching into wood and other materials that will give you proper contrast. Whiteboard works best from my experience.

I suppose you could also create some kind of Mona Lisa ninja/pirate hybrid but I'm not responsible for what might happen to you...<br></br><img alt="Arrmatey_showroom_image" src="http://static0.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/eef77895-cc10-3b8c-8ab3-93a3a0c81cc5/arrmatey_showroom_image.jpg" />

Corner Marks Plan

A filler piece I added to a PETG sheet earlier in the year. Its purpose is to mark a page within a book you reference often. The original one I made grabbed the paper to the point you had to be careful not to rip the paper taking it off. I went ahead and included a revision that uses a larger gap between the front and back; hopefully giving it less of a grab.

Squiddy the Extremely Angry Octopus Necklace Plan

With Squiddy the extremely angry octopus I tried to capture "frenzied murderous rage" on his little one eyed face. I think I succeeded!

The antenna growing out of the top of his head picked up broadcast TV. Sadly he missed the recent change to digital so he's been missing his favorite soaps...hence the rage.

Feel free to switch his expression from "frenzied murderous rage" to "blissful happiness" because he scored a free subscription to reader's digest...

Cut Squiddy from acrylic in any color of your choosing; although I think he'd look totally tubular in black.

Small Acrylic Chain

For the first self titled "Free File Friday" I have a sheet of small chain links that fits into a P1 sheet. These are small enough that you need to heat the links up before attempting to click them together. The result is a tightly fitting chain you could work into lighting fixture designs, earrings, bracelets and necklaces; cost permitting. Feel free to incorporate this into your designs, free and for profit.
Measurements: 10mm outside diameter, 6mm Dia. inside. 256 links on the sheet, adjust the ratio of solid to open links as needed.
Materials: You need to use 3mm or thinner material.
Tips: Heat the links with the openings just enough to allow clearance of solid links. Too much and the acrylic will deform.

Dry Erase Office Calendar Plan

Even larger than the P2 version; this dry erase calendar can be mounted onto a wall and used by an office to track daily tasks. Right hand field allows space for additional info.
Notes: The calendar will show up with the lines and days not colored in. That's your job! Take a dark dry erase marker and press it into the etchings to fill them. If this seems too tedious, just make the intern do it!
Hints:
-Move or remove the holes depending on how you plan to hang it. Thicker acrylic is better if you want to lean it against something. Do not over tighten mounting screws or you'll crack the acrylic.
-Hang a dry erase maker from a piece of string tied to the cap and always have one handy.
Materials: Use white acrylic. 3mm or thicker. P3 sheet size.
Dimensions: 790 W x 384mm H<br></br><img alt="Dryerasep3plan1_showroom_image" src="http://static0.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/31ed11ff-80b2-3b8f-ae26-31756b056c67/dryerasep3plan1_showroom_image.jpg" />

Dry Erase Monthly Calendar Plan

Sadly the time has come to throw your '07 "Kitties in Trouble" calendar into the trash... replace it by making your own dry erase calendar! Boxes for each day of the week allow you to easily keep track of work meetings or when that next unemployment check is due. Save calendar money by doodling your own artwork!
Notes: The calendar will show up with the lines and days not colored in. That's your job! Take a dark dry erase marker and press it into the etchings to fill them.
Hints:
-Move or remove the holes depending on how you plan to hang it. Thicker acrylic is better if you want to lean it against something.
-Use at home and make the kids draw you new pieces of art throughout the month.
Materials: Use white acrylic. 3mm or thicker. P2 sheet size.

Lovers necklace with bonus third wheel charm.

Show the third wheel some love with this three part necklace charm set. You and your lover get the red heart to show the world the undying affection you have for each other. The third wheel gets the large tire charm with "third wheel" thoughtfully engraved onto the sidewall. Give as a gift or as a not so subtle message for the "wheel" to ponder on. I can make a fourth, fifth wheel etc. although if you're having that sort of multi-wheel-friend issue you are beyond the help of a simple charm necklace.

How to put together: Each of the lovers stand on either side of the person assigned as the "third wheel"; then connect the hearts through the middle of the wheel charm. This might prove awkward... This is a work in progress.<br></br><img alt="Thirdwheelcharm_showroom_image" src="http://static0.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/4429a9b6-dc1d-36ee-a0c8-50ef41302deb/thirdwheelcharm_showroom_image.jpg" />

Uncomfortable Chopsticks

Some people like the easy life... soft chairs and jobs with vacation time and preventative dental care. These chopsticks aren't for those people. These uncomfortable chopsticks will fight you the entire way from sushi boat to mouth. Is it because they're shorter than average chopsticks, or is it because they're like holding a sharp cornered rectangle for a eating utensil? We may never know for sure. I am hesitant to say this is a design failure on my part... I'm going with the concept that some people want to take the hard road and will actually welcome a harder to use and ultimately less functional chopstick.
One 6mm P1 sheet will make enough chopsticks to frustrate approximately 20 people.<br></br><img alt="Unhappythumb_showroom_image" src="http://static2.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/47c51d10-aa3e-3764-93e7-57214ff90dbb/unhappythumb_showroom_image.jpg" />

Geta Sandal Plan

A free plan for a Japanese style geta sandal. Designed for 9mm thick MDF material. I'm sure you can improve on this plan alot if you want to make it. :) Try getting rid of half the nodes for starters, make the shapes share more cut lines to lower the cost. Adjust the dimensions and try doing it without nodes all together. If I were to make it again I might add another layer to the back heel.
-Sandal is 10″(256mm) long, 4.5″(118.3mm) wide. 2.25"(60mm) tall.
-5mm nylon rope seemed to work ok as a strap material.

Cause Ribbon Plan

Simple plan for a cause type ribbon. Attach a pin back to it; or use it as a necklace. Smaller versions might be part of a charm bracelet. Cut some out of colored acrylic and sell them to raise money for your favorite non-profit!

Some color examples include RED: Aids/HIV. ORANGE: Hunger Awareness GREY: Brain Cancer PINK:Breast Cancer.

You can reduce the making cost by removing the raster fill and vector lines that are currently in the file.<br></br><img alt="Ribbonplanimg_showroom_image" src="http://static1.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/ea9cb4fc-3a5f-3955-a527-39263e8b1f73/ribbonplanimg_showroom_image.jpg" />

A look at engraving on whiteboard material. Images are turned into vector shapes within Adobe Illustrator and created using all three raster fills including several vector outlines. Acrylic paint is rubbed into the engraving of some of the items.<br></br><img alt="Moonpaintedcut_showroom_image" src="http://static3.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/06c61baf-2710-329d-ab95-a977ec839300/moonpaintedcut_showroom_image.jpg" />

Miniature Wooden Coffin

If we can have Christmas in July, why not Halloween in June? These little coffins are made from layers of MDF held together with wood glue. Red felt with a tufted pattern adorns the inside of these traditionally shaped “toe pincher” caskets. The lid fit snugly in place and can be removed as needed. Smaller versions can also be worn as a spooky necklace.<br></br><img alt="Coffinmain1_showroom_image" src="http://static1.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/6e54845b-3cc0-35a9-91d4-b8d2ab13ee8b/coffinmain1_showroom_image.jpg" />

Acrylic PC Fan Grills

I designed these based on the standard size of an 80mm dia. fan grill. I’m very happy with the level of detail the laser cutter was able to accomplish. They’re mountable with the original fan screws; although one has to be careful not to over tighten. I plan to make these available with more designs so the end buyer can pick and choose what fan grills they want on a sheet.<br></br><img alt="Pcfangrillssmll2_showroom_image" src="http://static1.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/74eab575-c55c-37f7-833d-835127455273/pcfangrillssmll2_showroom_image.jpg" />

Acrylic Bamboo Earring Holder

White acrylic earring holder made from one 3mm, P3 sized sheet. You can hook your jewelry over the many leaves and stems; or into one of the 230 small holes that cover the piece. Larger holes allow it to be hung on a wire or mounted with spacers onto a wall. Made to resemble interlocking bamboo. I do have plans to remake this in different sizes and materials. More info at: http://www.shoppingzen.com/projects/acrylic-bamboo-earring-holder/3<br></br><img alt="Earringholder01a_showroom_image" src="http://static0.ponoko.com/design_images/images/13670/16d71f54-d325-3b32-84e9-528e24d70cdf/earringholder01a_showroom_image.jpg" />
