Most alphabet puzzles for children feature all capital letters and letter shapes that are rounded and sans-serif. When reading, however, children will primarily encounter lower-case letters in a serif font, such as Times Roman, Goudy, Baskerville, or Garamond. The letters "a" and "g" are especially conspicuous in their differences between the most common puzzle glyphs and the most common print glyphs.

Gluing the puzzle frame to a thin base layer, not forgetting the cut-out middles of some letters, is recommended.
