Design notes

Wool felt is incredibly resilient and retains it's unique properties for decades. It is wear resistant, cuts with a smooth edge that does not fray. The colors are vibrant and non toxic.

Please note that as a natural material, felt has a strong burnt smell after laser cutting. The edge scorches and turns brown which is more noticeable on the lighter colors. For tips on how to clean felt and remove the smell, check out this blog post

Large amounts of raster engraving are not recommended. Heavy engraving is recommended as the light engraving does not show up over the surface texture.

Typical uses

Crafts, jewelry, rugs, table mats, coasters, insulation, sound dampening etc

Environmental info

Wool felt is a renewable and environmentally friendly resource.

Adhesives, joints & fastenings

Felt can be joined with typical fabric and sewing techniques.

Tips from other designers

Josh says:

It's important to note before ordering a design on felt that it will arrive with a burnt ash look on the edges of the cuts, and as mentioned above, a burnt smell. The main reccomendations from Ponoko users to remove these is dry cleaning (either professional or with tumble dryer dry clean sheets) and leaving it to air out.

how well does this stuff stick to a surface without being glued or attached down. i.e like mousepads?

Hi Nick -

Felt doesn't tend to stick to surfaces well without some sort of adhesive. For our mousepads here in the Ponoko lab we used a P1 square of black felt along with some .5mm clear silicone to give it a grip on our work surface:

I hope that helps for starters.
