Design notes

The design rules are different than for laser cutting.

Read the design guide before you start your design.

Photochemical machining is great for intricate designs like jewelry and name badges. You can etch into one side of your design.

Can I get a sample?

You can get a sample here.

Typical uses

Jewelry, signage, furniture detail, mechanical parts.

Environmental info

Recyclable.

Adhesives, joints & fastenings

Stainless steel best connected with mechanical fastenings, soldering, brazing or welding.

A two part epoxy may be used to stick metal to other materials. For more info about gluing metal see this site.

Hi there, When you say it can be etched. Does it mean that the surface of the metal is carved?

Thank you!

Dan says:

Hi Lorena -

When using PCM to etch a material, the top layer of metal is removed, to a depth of about half the material thickness. The result is kind of like carving, and leaves a lighter matte texture over the etched area. I hope that helps clear things up. Thanks!

Thanks Dan,
I'm designing cutouts too. Should I draw the holes 0.4mm smaller so the cut shape will be 0.4mm larger?

thank you!

Dayma says:

Hi Lorena. A holes dimensions should be very close to what it is in the file. If there is a kerf, it should be closer to around .1mm or .2mm. We recommend making test parts and measuring them if you need tight accuracy. Thanks.

Hi Dayma,
I'm interpreting your answer as I have to draw the holes same size as per required final cut. Thank you! ordering soon...

This price appears to only be for photo-etching the metal, is it possible to have the metal laser cut without any photo-etching at a lower cost?

Dayma says:

Hi Shane. We only use photochemical machining to engrave and cut the sheets. We believe it gives a smoother and more accurate edge over laser cutting it. Thanks.

Is it possible for you to make somethign like 'Metal Earth' Models, but simpler. I'm looking for a metal sheet card that can be assembled into a particular house.

Hi Veronica.
Yes it is possible to make metal earth models using this process.
Thanks!

Is this stuff bendable?

Added 7 months ago. ( delete )
281243_947619580668_381710_n_small
Dan says:

Hi Geoffrey -

Yep - You can bend it with a vise or with other hand tools. You can also etch a 1mm thick line to pre-score the bends in your design.

I hope that helps clear things up. I might recommend getting your hands on a sample from our sample store to get a feel for the bendiness:

Metal options are too limited. P3 sheets are not available, and I cannot choose other metals. Thickness options are also very limited.

Are metals shipped with a protective tape on the surface? If so, is the tape cut through by the cut or engrave lines of my design? Thanks!

Shannon says:

Hi Christian,

Metals are not shipped with protective paper. Metals are processed using Photochemical machining, where designs are tabbed into the surrounding material. You can read more about designing for PCM in the link above. Hope that helps!

Dayma says:

Hi Valerie,

The edges are not sharp like a knife. They're slightly rounded but would likely benefit from a light sanding to make sure they aren't sharp.

Thanks
