Mylar - whitish grey, translucent
0.010 inches
What is it
Mylar® is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is used for its high tensile strength, chemical and dimensional stability, gas and aroma barrier properties, and electrical insulation.
Design notes
We cannot recommend engravings of any kind, because they are hardly visible on the material and tend to deform it.
Typical uses
Thanks to its thinness of only 0.3 mm it can be cut with a laser easily and fits flexibly to surfaces - this makes it the perfect material for all kinds of stencils.

Tips from other designers
If anyone else is wondering whether this can be used as an SMD stencil, the answer is "yes, but not very easily".
Problem is that you need to modify the stencil image a lot. Normally SMD stencils are 0.1 mm thick, so 0.3 mm is quite a lot. This can be compensated by reducing the aperture sizes. Also making holes smaller than 0.5 mm is not possible, so for fine-pitch components you will have to make a long line across the row of pads instead.
