Australia’s State of Design

design festival in Melbourne; 14–25 July 2010

A 3D graffiti art installation, a documentary screening on the resurgence of letterpress printing, a two day workshop on making and printing your own garment with Envelope, a making party with Makedo, a performance piece about lace,  and a street projection art festival are just a handful of the amazingly fun-sounding events at this year’s State of Design festival in VIC, Australia.

The festival runs from 14 July – 25 July throughout the metro-Melbourne area. In addition to the huge list of events open to the public as part of Design for Everyone, there are also several different trade shows open to those in the business during the week and TO THE PUBLIC that weekend.

Design:Made:Trade will showcase Australia’s top talent in furniture, fashion, jewelry, textiles, and product design. The exhibitor list includes previously featured design teams Antlitz, Buro North,  and In-Sync Designs.

The furniture trade show Furnitex will run concurrently and host Decoration + Design, Materia, and Lightsource.

Also during State of Design, winning student work from the Anno competition will be displayed on the big screen at Federation Square. The deadline to enter the competition is over, but there is still time to vote for your favorite student work in advertising, architecture, fashion, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, and photography.

The project currently at #1 is this flat pack, CNC cut rocking chair by Nat Campbell of Curtin University of Technology.
